  • What is Therapeutic Ashtanga Yoga Therapy & Ayurveda ?

It is significantly different from a regular Yoga classes, where the practitioner takes practice for an exercise, fitness regimen and/or has a goal in obtaining perfection of postures.

tWhereas in the traditional practice of Ashtanga Yoga Therapy , the first primary series of practice sessions is known as Yoga Chikitsa , in sanskrit translates to Yoga Therapy.

The teacher facilitates the practice with appropriate modification to improve, heal, maintain optimal health and wellbeing for individual needs.

In the traditional Ashtanga Yoga Therapy practice the approach is having a daily routine - daily wellness over perfection and this is theTherapeutic Yoga approach where the practice of yoga adapts to suit an individual’s wellness goals.

Ashtanga Yoga /Ayurveda Therapeutic practice works within small groups and/or one on one private for more attention needed to a condition. Depending on how individualized an approach you are looking for, and whether you are willing to dedicate to a daily practice at home with a therapeutic practice designed just for you this is the key to optimizing your health and well-being. There are two cornerstones for yoga therapy /yoga practices /ayurveda to be effective

Sandhana ( spiritual daily practice ) and Dinacharya ( daily routines to establish balance and optimal health & wellbeing ) are cornerstones to health and wellness.

Sadhana , is a daily spiritual practice that represents a disciplined surrendering of many unhealthy habits, toxins and the ego, in which the practitioner takes daily practices of asana, pranayama, meditation and chanting on a daily basis. The term sadhana comes from the Sanskrit root, sadhu, meaning “go straight to a goal”. When we can routinely apply this to the mind, body and spirit in the pursuit of a spiritual goal then it is the most natural and efficient way to surrender the ego, the illness, the disease to find relief from suffering and to attain peace.

For this reason, sadhana is known as the cornerstone of the discipline of yoga. Yoga provides a huge variety of tools for this purpose, ranging from physical practices, such as asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques), to more introspective applications, such as svadhyaya (self-study) and ceasing the fluctuations of the mind - meditation. It is important to choose practices that work for you, in order to provide the best outcome of wellbeing, conditions for you to stay committed with joy, ease and purpose.

How to begin the discipline for sadhana to take charge of your own health? Maintaining regularity is vital and arguably the most important facet of sadhana, and of lifestyle and health changes so it does help to commit to practice at the same time each day to create a routine ( dinacharya). The time of day itself is not important - for some, practicing sadhana soon after awakening helps them to keep up the practice without distraction or excuses, whereas for others, later in the morning, afternoon or evenings are best to allow them more focus or concentration or to meet their life schedule, responsibilities and obligations.

Although sadhana is centred around an ultimate spiritual goal, the practice should be undertaken without any specific goal in mind, that when arriving to Sadhana one should be practiced for the sake of maintaining the practice, and as a means of cultivating discipline. To focus the mind on a goal during sadhana will only bring ego, unhealthiness into the practice, rather than the sense of surrender that is a routine that you do for yourself to nurture your mind and body in return it’s reward will help you gain better control over your mind and body from the way you eat, the way you sit, the way you stand, the way you breathe, the way you conduct your body, mind and your energies and emotions

Dinacharya (daily living guidelines) and Ritucharya (seasonal guidelines for living) are two cornerstones of ayurvedic health which is the sister science of yoga. The Ayurvedic acharyas practiced the concept of “preventive health care Dinacharya helps us to create balance during the changes in which occur naturally throughout the cycles of the day. The activities included in dinacharya include cleansing, massage, exercise, study, meditation and yoga. There are clear guidelines about the timing of all these activities. Dinacharya practices are ancient healing practices that advocates of Ayurveda today say are even more beneficial in the modern lifestyle as ever before.

There are Guidelines that can vary, but the suggested sample of routines for dinacharya are as follows:

Morning: Rise two hours before sunrise. Wash the face and eyes, and scrape the tongue. Massage the body with oil. Exercise by practicing yoga and/or pranayama. Bathe, meditate and eat breakfast.

Midday: Eat the largest meal of the day.

Evening: Have a light dinner at least three hours before bedtime, then take a walk. Go to bed around 10 p.m.

This routine is to keep the body in tune with nature of the sun and the cycles of the three doshas - vata, pitta and kapha, which are dominant at the following times of day:

    Kapha: 6 - 10 a.m. and 6 - 10 p.m.

    Pitta: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.

    Vata: 2 - 6 p.m. and 2 - 6 a.m

  • Yoga therapy takes more than one session to solidify the techniques and fully integrate you into the practices of your new lifestyle medicine daily routine.

Everyday one should practice accordingly to their needs.

The first appointment is an intake session and will last approximately 60 minutes. At the end of this session, you will receive a short meditation practice.

The second appointment is to develop your daily practice and routine. This session will take 55 - 60 minutes.

I highly recommend the investment to start a daily lifestyle routine . You can begin to join in with our sangha-satsang ( a small group of practitioners taking practice all for the mere purpose of benefiting our health, livelihood and wellbeing) once you feel comfortable for your continued personal daily practice taught to you should private cost become not feasible. There is an opportunity for growth, advancement, continued ongoing support, mentorship and knowledge.

  • Is Yoga Therapy Right For You?

There are so many different healing methods, and Yoga Therapy is a unique one that supports addressing the mind, body, and spirit all at once.

Do you often feel fatigued, burnout, restless or tense?

Do you get sluggish, tired quickly and struggle to regain energy?

Are you struggling to manage stress and feel that your inner balance is off?

Are you looking for a natural way to get rid of discomfort, aches and pain?

Do you find classical fitness training too strenuous and lacking in variety?

Would you like to improve your mental, emotional and physical resilience?

Need something to integrate with your current health care to prevent dependency to medications ?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, Yoga Therapy might be exactly what you are looking for!

    Lets Get Started ….

Yoga is well known as a potential therapeutic and healing method for the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga Therapy takes this one step further through the specific application of yoga tools, such as postures, breathwork, meditation, and more, to address an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional needs.

It is a common myth that yoga is only about stretching, moving, or becoming a pretzel. In reality, Yoga is so much more than that! Yoga therapy can help people on a broad spectrum, ranging from those who can’t move at all to those who are very active.

The unique yoga therapy approach addresses every aspect of life, rather than considering each body part or system separately. Yoga therapy is a safe way of working with your body and mind’s natural capacity to optimize wellbeing. The sessions are designed to your individual needs rather than providing a generic approach. Yoga therapists have in-depth training to help them assess and keep their clients safe. They work with you to address your specific goals while considering any contraindications you may be dealing with.

    The Benefits Of Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy targets healing on the levels of mind-body-spirit simultaneously. Regardless of the illness you may have, stress can worsen symptoms and lengthen recovery times, and unfortunately, stress is often unavoidable. The primary benefit of yogic practices is their stress-reducing effects, which greatly help promote general emotional balance and assist with mood regulation.

Breathing techniques and meditation, a core part of yoga, can change your relationship with pain and how you experience it. Yoga practices can help you transform your relationship with yourself and the conditions which you live in. Yoga can help improve physical and mental health at the same time by transforming suffering, managing or decreasing stress, changing habits of addiction, improving mood and sleep, supporting the natural life process of healthy aging, and improving balance.

Traditional Ashtanga Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda diet and lifestyle became her therapy and medicine as a 20 year-old suffering from genetic painful endometriosis and early onset ovarian cancer. She was looking for natural alternative healing modalities that was non allopathic to address the root cause of her constant pain, irregular menstrual cycle, fatigued and anemia. After many appointments back and forth with her medical provider, it was obvious that the choice was up to her to heal, address, manage, cope and live with the diagnosis. She turned down the medications and suggested conventional therapies to do more research and educate herself. She was then introduced to alternative natural integrative ancient therapies of Ashtanga Yoga, Breath practice, Meditation, Mantras, Ayurveda and Lifestyle . By the time she was 27 years old, she chose to elect the surgery , total hysterectomy to prevent any worsening, growth and problems developing and integrated the alternative ancient practices dedicating her health care to daily rituals of two hours each morning and one hour at evening to Ashtanga Yoga, Breath- Pranayama, Meditation, Mindfulness Lifestyle , Ayurvedic Diet and health and it worked for her condition.

Today, she expresses this was the best investment of health care to herself. “ I have never felt better and more alive everyday after healing from surgery and taken on the practices to this present day.” It has been my most rewarding effective healing modality over the past 30 years, making me independent, accountable and responsible for my own health, well-being and healing.

Today , She integrates her knowledge of Ayurveda for her personal practice and for her public and private Ashtanga Yoga Therapy classes. She believes that our lifestyle can be examined before taking rushing to conventional - allopathic medicine.

While knowing what she knows also as a licensed nurse at the time in the health care setting, she knew the significance of each disciplines and that working with a integrative complimentary approach alongside her health care team of practitioners was only beneficial to support where she would like her life and health to be at its most natural way, closest to nature in order to return her body and mind to homeostasis, pain free and for a long term healthy state with quality of life.

This is her attitude towards healthcare that she educated and trained upon the modalities of integrative ancient practices, how ashtanga yoga practices is yoga therapy, Ayurveda health for diet, and lifestyle, breath work and meditation for longevity of quality of life is vital. Which is the approach she promotes with her students and clients.

Christina educates her students and clients to make time for swadhyaya - self study to know that Each discipline of therapy and medicine practices ; western allopathic therapy vs eastern integrative complementary therapy has its own place and time where necessary. There are cases where both disciplines are needed. But on the other hand there are cases its not.
